Layers of Discovery celebrates the innovative and unique artwork of Ingrid Dee Magidson.  In this, her second volume of work, we see the continuing evolution of experimentation and discovery from this imaginative artist.  It is also the twentieth anniversary of the start of her career.

Magidson's work is about beauty, indeed she is in love with beauty.  As such, the artist's work requires you to slow down and look. At first glance, one encounters the quiet authority of Renaissance portraiture-figures composed in stillness, faces illuminated by a familiar, classical light. Yet as the eye adjusts, the image begins to shift. Surfaces open. Ancient writings drift across skin. Butterflies hover in suspended motion. Layers of pigment, collage, and embedded objects create a space that is neither entirely painting nor entirely sculpture, but something suspended between image and presence. What appears whole at a distance reveals itself, upon approach, as an intricate construction.

There is a dreamlike mood to Magidson's work, the subject floating as an apparition amongst her most treasured possessions and memories. Yet we know absolutely from the use of historical style that time has long turned the corporeal to spirit. And somehow they are still alive too, their memories, their dreams and desires are our memories, dreams and desires.  And the cycle continues as we look deeper into the art, into beauty and to ourselves.

With special introduction by Dr. Kirsten Olds, associate provost for the arts, Marilynn and Carl Thoma professor and director of the Oklahoma State University Museum of Art.  Dr. Olds is also the curator for Magidson's exhibition at the Oklahoma State University Museum of Art June 9 through July 26, 2026.
